The Goats are coming back!

Our goats will soon return full time to Great River in their newly secure enclosure! Our goats have spent the past year living their best lives on a beautiful organic farm, Dancing the Land Farm, where they've been able to enjoy large open spaces, fodder and forage and a few stolen CSA vegetables, and the company of an entire herd of Angora and milking goats.

Over that same year, our goat team has re-evaluated our entire upper garden and adjacent outdoor spaces in terms of goat safety and longer term goals for our animal program and program development; evaluated and come to an agreement to relocate the main goat pen to the front and center area of the school; worked with numerous stakeholders and our building company to verify that we can in fact make all of the necessary changes; worked the site to design, reshape and fence the existing infrastructure with the complex needs of a school and urban setting alongside the needs for additional security and everyday goat care necessities; and finally, this week our hand-built custom goat barn arrived for a community barn-raising and additional interior security fencing. We expect these final steps to be accomplished in the next week or two at most.

In school, 7/8 students will continue their work on improving the goat barn and goat pen infrastructure throughout the fall and beyond. As soon as our barn and inner security fence are fully operational, the goats will return full-time to the GRS campus and their beloved roles in our urban community.

Student Health Coordinator, Katie Engelking to leave Great River School

So long, Farewell, Auf wiedersehen, Katie!
Some of you may know that our awesome Health Coordinator, Katie Engelking will be leaving GRS to pursue a new career!  Katie recently graduated from Stout with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies and will be working in her field. Stop by the health office anytime and pass along your well wishes to Katie or if you would like to write a note  of gratitude, you can turn it in to Jennifer at the front desk!  Katie's last day will be November 6th! Congrats Katie

The Student Health Coordinator is responsible for serving as a liaison between the Licensed School Nurse (LSN; School Nurse consultant), student health and wellness faculty/staff members, and parents/guardians relating to health care issues and maintaining related health records. Student Health Coordinator also assists students with routine health care protocols.

LIST League basketball sign-up for grades 5-8

LIST co-ed basketball will run from mid-November through mid-February. We anticipate offering one 5-6 team and one 7-8 team. 5-6 team: Practices Mondays and Fridays from 4-5:15 and games on Wednesdays.

November 18, 4-5:15 pm will be an open practice for anyone who is interested in learning more 7-8 team: Practices Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:15 and games on Fridays.

SAVE THE DATE: Snow Formal for Upper Adolescent, November 15th!

On November 15th, Great River School will be holding the First Snow Formal dance!
Admission is $7 and the theme is winter gothic.

IMPORTANT In order to attend the formal, students will need to fill out the drug and alcohol form. If students want to bring outside guests they will need to get a form from Aidan Clements.

Greetings Families,

There will be a SEAC (Special Education Advisory Council) meeting, TONIGHT, Monday, October 28th at 6pm.  All parents / guardians of students currently receiving special education services are invited to attend. 

For the meeting tonight, we will have a 'Key Experience debrief' to provide quality feedback to GRS.  If time permits, we can break into small groups and begin to develop an online resources page.

Minnesota law requires each school district in the state to have a SEAC although it does not specify how the groups should be organized or what duties they should perform. As a result, each SEAC may have a unique mission and structure.

Parents give many reasons for joining a SEAC, including these:

Some background information about Jeremy Sartain:
I am currently the Board Chair for Great River School.  One reason I joined the Board is to assure special education (staff, caregivers and students) had representation.  Jennie and I are organizing SEAC meetings this year (with help from Brad and Lindsey).

What is Montessori Education?

Calling ALL 5th - 8th Grade Ultimate Players!

Join us for our end of the season Hat Tournament!

Our high school players are hosting a fundraiser “Ultimate Hat Tournament” for any and all GRS 5th-8th graders that would like to participate. This will be on Monday, October 14, after school until about 6:30pm at McMurray Fields.

Players will walk over to McMurray after school and put their name in a hat. Our high school players will run a short throwing clinic for the middle schoolers while we draw out random names to make teams. Each team will get assigned 1-2 high school players as coaches and the tournament will start at 5:00pm after warm ups and go until about 6:30pm. The number of games will be dependent on the number of players/teams. (probably 3 short games for all)

The money from this fundraiser will help pay for winter dome time for our high school teams. There is a recommended $5-$10 donation to participate, but we will accept any donation. You can either pay with cash at McMurray or you can prepay here through our PayPal Link. No need to have a login. If you plan to attend, please have your player bring a light and a dark shirt and a water bottle. Parents are invited to watch and cheer!

Harvest Fest is an annual tradition celebrating the work of our Lower Adolescents and the joy of the harvest.  Come share soup, cider and singing with other GRS families.  Buy works created by Great River students on their Key Experiences and in CAS (Creative, Active, Service) workshops.  There will be games and music for all ages.

LIST League basketball coaches wanted!

We are looking for coaches for our LIST basketball teams, one for grades 5-6 and one for grades 7-8. The season is late November to early February (10 weeks). The team will practice after school one-two days per week from 4-5:30 pm (flexible depending on your schedule). Games are Wednesdays for the 5-6 team and Fridays for the 7-8 team.
