7 / 8 J-Term Theatre Intensives 2024

What is J-Term?

Between the months of January and February, all Lower Adolescent students (7th and 8th graders) at Great River School participate in a theater intensive. This year, they have been working hard to prepare the musical “Wizard of Oz”  and the play “The Hound of the Baskervilles” for our community. This long-standing tradition at GRS helps students foster confidence and creativity, while also building community within our students. J-Term helps build resilience by pushing our students to do something that may not be comfortable doing and allowing them to overcome fears of public speaking. The students have been involved in everything in the productions from acting, singing, designing set pieces, costumes, lighting, and props, and are so excited to share their hard work with you. Please join us for one of our 8 performances!

Wizard of Oz Synopsis:

Dorothy Gale, a young girl living on a farm in Kansas, is swept away by a cyclone along with her dog Toto, and lands in the magical land of Oz. To get back to Kansas, she must see the Wizard of Oz. Along the way to the Emerald City, where the Wizard resides, Dorothy meets three friends who accompany her. The Scarecrow, who wishes for a brain, the Tin Woodman, who wishes for a heart, and the Cowardly Lion, who wishes to be courageous. On her journey, she must face the Wicked Witch of the West, who tries to steal Dorothy’s magic Slippers and conquer the land of Oz for herself.

Will she be able to return to Kansas?

Hound of Baskervilles Synopsis

Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick, Dr. John Watson, have left on a holiday, leaving their nieces-Shirley and Jennie-to keep watch over the flat at 221B Bleecker Street. Shirley and Jennie are busy preparing for exams when there's a knock on the door. It's Dr. Mortimer and Sir Henry Baskerville who've come to seek the assistance of the famous Sherlock Holmes. Sir Charles Baskerville has died a mysterious death. Is he the most recent victim of the curse of the Baskervilles-a curse linked to the nightmarish tales of a supernatural Hound that haunts the Moors of Devonshire? They must help Sir Henry, the only surviving heir to the Baskerville legacy after he receives a threat. “We’re all you've got,” says Shirley. “We're up to the challenge,” chimes Jennie. In this thrilling adaptation full of wailing hounds and slithering Mists, Shirley and Jennie follow the trail of evidence until at last they are confronted by the ravenous Hound itself.

Age Recommendation: Recommended for all ages, however everyone will need to sit still and be quiet for the entirety of the show.
